Side Effects of the Wellness Diet

The Wellness Diet—the sneaky, modern guise of diet culture that cloaks itself as “health and wellness”—is NOT a benign intervention.

It can have terrible side effects, including harming your relationship with food and your body, or driving you even further into an existing disorder. For many people, starting on one of these “resets,” “plans,” “programs,” “protocols,” or “lifestyle changes” means tumbling down the rabbit hole of food restrictions, rebound bingeing, compensatory behaviors, and general misery.

I know that these kinds of diets can be so tempting this time of year, after a holiday season of eating more fun and festive foods than usual.

But if you really care about your well-being, just say no to “resets” and any other kind of diet in 2019.

These “food regimens" only strengthen the “good vs. bad” food dichotomy and other diet-culture messaging, keeping us stuck in a negative relationship with food and our bodies and thereby harming our overall health. You deserve so much better than that.
